Vöggubarnsins mál

– The Infant's Speech –

(Guðfinna Jónsdóttir's original text)

Þú, sem enn átt enga drauma,
ekkert gull í sjóð,
hvílir mjúkt á hvítum svæfli
kinnin fagurrjóð.
Yndi þitt og allur heimur
er mitt vögguljóð.

Röddin þín á engin orð
og undurlítinn hljóm.
Hún er lík og leiki blær
við lítil skógarblóm
eða fugl í laufi ljóði
ljúfum glöðum róm.

Lít ég undir léttum brúnum
lítinn himin þinn.
Himin, sem er gott að geta
geymt við barminn sinn,
leitt í huga, lyft í brosi,
læst í hjartað inn.

Kveikir þar á kerti sínu,
kyndir arinbál,
leysir klaka, lyftir björgum
lítil, óskírð sál.
Vekur þúsund verndarengla
vöggubarnsins mál.

(translation by Helga Ragnarsdóttir)

You, who still has no dreams,

No coffers of gold,

Rest softly on a white pillow

 Rosy cheek.

Your loveliness and world

Is my lullaby.

Your voice has no words
And a tiny sound.

It is as if a breeze
Around small forest flowers,

Or a bird’s poem

In a soft happy voice.

Below light brows

I see your sky.

A sky, which is comforting to
Keep at one’s bosom.

Keep in mind, elevate in a smile,

Lock in one’s heart.

There it lights its candle,

Stokes the open fire,

Melts ice, moves mountains,

Little unbaptised soul.

A thousand guardian angels are
Awoken by the infant’s speech
